Add the iPad to the equation and you can easily find yourself working away inside the coffee shop, enjoying your flat white, without even thinking about how far technology has come in the last 5 years. There is however a slight hitch. Netbook keyboards are small, cramped, and uncomforatble, and the idea of lugging a standard-sized keyboard around with you seems a little self-defeating. Fortunately, however, Thanko has recently developed the ultimate space-saving addition for these new generation slates.

Thanko, a Tokyo-based gadget maker, responsible for numerous spy cameras, multimedia players, GPS watches, and the like, has bought the intellectual property rights for this ground-breaking device after the original developer, Stowaway, closed down late last year. Good thing Thanko has decided to revive the portable keyboard technology, redesigning it to ensure compatibility with all the latest portable gadgets, including Apple’s most recent addition; the ipad.

The portable keyboard measures 350 x 129 x 10mm (13.8 x 5.1 x 0.4 in) when measured in its full capacity, and only 91 x 129 x 20mm (3.6 x 5.1 x 0.8 in) once collapsed. The keyboard can be “divided” into four segments after you’re finished using it, increasing it’s ability to seemingly ‘disappear’ while not in use. In addition to its compact size, Thanko’s portable full size keyboard only weighs an estimated 8 ounces (227 gr.), and the keyboard can be used with any system that supports a standard Windows or Mac OS operating system via a USB port. Unfortunately, bluetooth capability is still unavailable, a feature which would have made this little baby a real 10.

So if you’re a bit of a gadget nut, but you’ve found your fingers becoming increasingly claw-like after hours of cramped, frenzied typing, the new full-sized, collapsible keyboard will make a great addition to your electronics family. It is affordable, easy to use, and can be comfortably tucked away inside your pocket!
